Solid State Disk (SSD) Management for Reducing Disk Energy Consumption in Video Servers

چکیده
A promising approach to reducing disk energy consumption is to use multi-speed disks with lower rotational speeds, and allowing disks to run slowly when workloads are light can reduce their large contribution to the power used by video servers. We propose an SSD cache management scheme for video servers which use multi-speed disks. We formulate an integer linear problem (ILP) that determines videos cached on the SSD with the aim of minimizing overall disk energy consumption. Simulations show that our caching scheme allows disks to run at lower speeds, which saves disk energy consumption greatly.

SSDAlloc: Hybrid SSD/RAM Memory Management Made Easy
We introduce SSDAlloc, a hybrid main memory management system that allows developers to treat solid-state disk (SSD) as an extension of the RAM in a system. SSDAlloc moves the SSD upward in the memory hierarchy, usable as a larger, slower form of RAM instead of just a cache for the hard drive. Using SSDAlloc, applications can nearly transparently extend their memory footprints to hundreds of gi...

Power consumption now becomes the most critical performance limiting factor to solid state disk (SSD) in embedded systems. It is imperative to devise design methods and architectures for power efficient SSD designs. In our work, we present the first step towards low power SSD design, i.e., power estimation of SSD. We present a practical approach of SSD power estimation which tries to keep the a...
متن کاملBeating Netbooks Into Servers: Making Some Computers More Equal Than Others
With the advent of cheap netbooks, expanding Internet access to the developing world is becoming more and more feasible. However, classroom computers benefit from applications typically deployed on servers, such as proxy caches, WAN accelerators, backup, etc. Server infrastructure, unfortunately, is not as well suited for developing-world use, since it tends to be less ruggedized, more power-hu...
متن کاملPower, Energy, and Thermal Considerations in SSD-Based I/O Acceleration
Solid State Disks (SSDs) have risen to prominence as an I/O accelerator with low power consumption and high energy efficiency. In this paper, we question some common assumptions regarding SSDs’ operating temperature, dynamic power, and energy consumption through extensive empirical analysis. We examine three different real high-end SSDs that respectively employ multiple channels, cores, and fla...
